Rogers Park Mural > Mayfly Mayhem

Collaboration Mural:
Jennifer Rachwalski and mixed-media mosaic artist Andy Bellomo
Rogers Park on Touhy and Clark Street in Chicago

Mural Details:
72ft wide x 9ft/3in tall.
Nova paint and glass (the mayfly wing is the glass part and measures 17ft wide x 4ft/7in tall).
The mayfly has a short lifespan and is called one-day or one-day fly in some languages. Typically, the generations of mayflies in a population mature all at once. Seasonally, it is common to see them everywhere; tango-ing around each other in swarms...covering every available surface...and then eventually dying together. It is common to see a layer of them—a full generation—floating in lakes and rivers. They feed fish and another life cycle that we are all part of begins again. Mayfly Mayhem is a whimsically bittersweet tribute to living life to the fullest everyday with a mayfly and multicultural unicorn-fish sharing the message.

This was a community project sponsored by the Chicago Public Art Group for Lakeview—my role was assistant artist.
